Celebrating 20 Years of Excellent Patient Care
In the early 1990s North Santa Cruz County residents were served exclusively by one hospital. Patients, doctors and reproductive rights advocates began to look for another hospital alternative. The Santa Cruz Medical Clinic, a multispecialty medical group, approached Sutter Health, a large not-for-profit northern California health care system. They proposed an idea to build a unique hospital offering only inpatient and outpatient services and birthing services. Sutter Health listened.
Using patient feedback from many other Sutter hospitals and input from Santa Cruz Medical Clinic doctors, a unique new hospital was conceived. Key to the concept was creating a patient and family-centered environment with state-of-the-art facilities.
A joint project of Sutter Health and the Santa Cruz Medical Clinic, Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center (SMSC) was created and opened to patients in March 1996. The hospital has 30 licensed beds and is fully accredited by The Joint Commission.
To ensure this new hospital was responsive to community medical needs, a local Board of Trustees was appointed. Nursing and support personnel were hired and the SMSC patient-centered culture evolved. Since its opening in 1996, SMSC has received national acclaim for its facility design and innovative clinical programs. In 1996, it won a national design award from Modern Healthcare Magazine for what judges described as a "welcome departure from institutionalized-based care."
SMSC has consistently been in the top quartile of the nation in patient satisfaction. The hospital was designed and built to help you feel as comfortable as possible, yet is small enough to provide the utmost personal attention to every patient. At SMSC, you will find amenities you may not expect to find in most hospitals.

Honor a Loved One and Become Part of the Sutter Family
As part of our 20th anniversary celebration, a special space is currently taking shape at Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center — Lily’s Garden. Lily’s Garden will consist of a new brick courtyard area with newly commissioned sculptures and beautiful landscaping. This peaceful and serene area will provide a space for patients and visitors to relax, meditate and regroup while at the hospital.
"Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory." — Dr. Seuss
Lily’s Garden will also be a space where you can honor a child born at the hospital or commemorate and celebrate someone you love. Gardens and other healing landscapes have long been an important part of human life, especially when part of a hospital campus. The garden will feature a courtyard paved with memorial bricks — perfect for short inscribed messages to celebrate a birth or honor a life. In so doing, your loved one becomes a lasting part of our Sutter family.
Join us in building a healing garden for our patients, families and caregivers by dedicating a brick to someone you love. A limited number of engraved bricks are available for $1,000 each. To order your brick and find out more information, please go here.
Sutter Babies Arts Days
In celebration of our 20th anniversary, we partnered with the Arts Council Santa Cruz County to offer a series of events, Sutter Babies Arts Days, in which children born at the hospital and their parents were invited to create original artwork to be put on permanent display in our hospital rooms. Artwork will be judged and selected and winning artwork will be celebrated at the Annual Children’s Art Reception at the County Office building before going on permanent exhibition in hospital rooms.
